Special Session 15
MXENES: THE NEW RISING INNOVATIONS-GENERATING FIELD (SS15)

Since the discovery of graphene, the intensive studies on novel two-dimensional (2D) materials. Since the several years, a specific synthesis approach has been used to create a new family of 2D transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides from the layered MAX phases. These isolated 2D nanosheets of the Mn+1Xn stoichiometry and hexagonal structure were termed MXenes. MXenes received growing interest in recent years because of their specific properties which made them promising candidates as alternatives to graphene. Some unique properties of MXenes have been identified leading to suggestions of many potential applications. It should be however noted, that the investigations on MXenes are still at the initial stage.

This special session will provide the interdisciplinary forum for the open communication in the field of MXenes and will contribute to the rapid development of the new MXene research community. We will discuss the preparation, delamination, experimental and computational studies on MXenes properties as well as possibilities of research on their potential applications. We will exchange the information on our experience, research interests, and MXenes samples. It is expected that this potentially-rich area of new class of 2D materials will grow rapidly as an innovations-generating field. The special session is also organized to develop the European platform for MXenes. Researchers from different fields of science and technology are invited to join the european MXenes community and start the collaboration under joint research.

TOPICS:

  • preparation and delamination of MXenes
  • structure, properties and potential applications
  • experimental and computational studies
  • comparison with other graphene-like planar 2D materials
